Middle school students at Toledo Junior/Senior High School compete Tuesday in pedal car races, on an inflatable obstacle course or in the pugil pit, as part of the Oregon National Guard’s Physical Health and Adventure Training (PHAT) program. Sgt. 1st Class Jerrad Morgan runs the program with a team of five guardsmen. “We travel to high schools and colleges around the state and put on different health awareness events,” Morgan said. There were giveaways, but to get a National Guard lanyard or tote bag, students had to complete 30 pushups, 40 sit-ups or a minute and a half of flutter kicks. The group will be in high schools around the county this week.
