Anthropologist featured at festival this Saturday

Posted: Friday, Nov 9th, 2012

Rebecca Dobkins

Northwest Coast Native American art is among the most famous indigenous art in the world, but few realize that the southernmost extension of Northwest Coast art and culture is to be found here in western Oregon. To learn more, and to get an overview of the native cultures which have historically intersected along our coast, head to the Lincoln City Cultural Center on Saturday.

At 2 p.m., as part of the centerís second annual Native American Heritage Festival, curator and anthropologist Rebecca Dobkins will discuss the media and iconography traditional to western Oregon for centuries. In addition, Dobkins will discuss contemporary work by Native American artists associated with western Oregon, including weavers, regalia- makers, and carvers, as well as Newport-based artist Rick Bartow who had a major sculpture recently dedicated on the Mall in Washington, D.C., at the National Museum of the American Indian.
