Five Cuban artists are showing their artwork for the first time in the U.S. at Café Mundo in Newport.

El Proyecto Estado Solido is the work of artists Leafar Delgado Royo, Yohiszel Alarcon Torres, Amado David Olivera, Niurka Beatriz Royo and Romarico Montero Figueredo. The show features about 20 pieces of their individual art as well as their collaborative pieces.

“They collectively go out into a public place and do these paintings kind of as a tribute to a particular artist,” said Joanne Shamey, show organizer. “It was a little dream that they had; that they would just paint together in a public place and engage people.”

The group of friends and family first gathered together in Havana’s Metropolitan Park on Aug. 12, 2007, the birth date of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, to collectively paint a tribute to the artist. They continued to paint in public settings over the next two months, featuring tributes to Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon and Isadora Duncan. The series is titled “Angeles Caido,” or Fallen Angels.
