If people picture a skinny, nervous middle school student quaking in front of a microphone asking for a word’s language of origin, they might be surprised to hear a spelling bee described as “fun.” But that is the focus of the third annual Newport Community Spelling Bee, set for 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Newport campus of Oregon Coast Community College. The public is invited to attend, and as organizer Nancy Steinberg says, “I’m not sure who has more fun – the contestants or the audience.”
