Melvin Frank Stangel, 95, of Toledo, Ore., died Sept. 28, 2012 in Newport.
He was born Aug. 9, 1917 to Frank and Alma (Bruck) Stangel in Wilsonville, Ore. He attended West Linn High School and in 1941 entered the U.S. Army.
On June 8, 1946 Melvin married Charlotte Rounsville in Wilsonville, and soon after getting married Melvin deployed to honorably serve the country during World War II. Melvin and Charlotte moved to Toledo in 1948 where they raised their children. He had a career with Georgia-Pacific and CJ Johnson.
Melvin enjoyed bowling, woodworking and was a member of the Elks Lodge, and his bowling league.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Alma Stangel; son Joseph Stangel; brother, Richard Stangel; and sister Agnes (Stangel) Morris.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Charlotte Stangel; daughter, Mary (Robert) Buel; and son Frank Stangel, all of Toledo; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 231 E. Logsden Road in Siletz.
