The 2012 summer season was a big one for staff members of the Waldport High School Kayak Shack. Five students provided tours, rented kayaks and taught general boating safety, and, at the end of the season, made a profit for the first time in four years. Not only that, but they’ve been invited to participate in the American Canoe Association (ACA) National Paddle Conference in Charleston, SC next month.

To get to the conference, the students need to raise about $4,000 for airfare and hotel, according to supervisor Melissa Steinman.

This summer was the first season that staff members offered guided tours –Steinman noted that the five students gave 104 2-hour guided tours over the summer. “Their goal was 112 tours,” Steinman said. “These kids busted their tails.”
