NEWPORT – In its sixth year, Project Homeless Connect brought together community and social service organizations, state and local governments and health care professionals to assist homeless individuals who reside in Lincoln County.

The event featured two dental vans from Medical Teams International – an expansion of services from previous years, as well as pet checkups, haircuts, bicycle repair and opportunities to obtain vital documents – such as birth certificates, drivers’ licenses or identification.

By 11:23 a.m., just 2 ˝ hours after the doors opened, 118 homeless individuals had registered to receive services at the event. Samaritan House Executive Director Lola Jones noted that she had arrived before the doors opened and started serving coffee to those waiting in line at 8:30. “I went through two pump pots almost immediately,” she said.

Students in Oregon Coast Community College’s nursing program worked the event as escorts or providing health screenings under the direction of the Lions Medical teams. Individuals could get a hot meal and a variety of vaccinations at the event too.
