Bruce Waugh, known around Lincoln County as an all-around outdoorsman, also has an uncanny nose for finding mushrooms.
On a Wednesday morning, he’s only a few hundred feet down the trail in search of a few of his favorite fungi to put on display during this Saturday’s Northwest Wild Mushroom Cookoff event in Lincoln City when he abruptly stops short.
“Look what we have here,” he said, darting toward a mushroom with a shiny red cap covered with large white spots. It’s the highly poisonous amanita muscaria, which Waugh quickly cuts at its stem and gently places in his collection bag.
