Community spelling bee to raise funds for NHS academics

Are you a good speller? Do you want to raise money to help Newport High School students become good spellers, and scientists, and writers, and photographers and mathematicians?

Teams are now being formed for the third annual Newport Community Spelling Bee, to be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Newport campus of Oregon Coast Community College. The reigning champions for two years running, the bibliophiles of the Newport Public Library, will return to defend their title.

“The library team will be hard to beat, but there seems to be a movement afoot to dethrone them,” said event organizer Nancy Steinberg.
