John ‘Tom’ Thomas Vanderbeek


John “Tom” Thomas Vanderbeek, 69, of Kirkland, Ariz. and Waldport, Ore., died in a boating accident on Sept. 21, 2012 in Waldport.

He was born May 18, 1943 to Herman Loers Vanderbeek and Laura Marie Muzzall Vanderbeek in Detroit, Mich. He graduated from Hillsboro High School, in Hillsboro, Ore. and from Portland State University.

Tom married Marilyn Rupert at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Portland, Ore. in 1965.

He served in the Oregon Air National Guard.

Tom owned Vanderbeek Marine in Hillsboro, and later Inland Marine in Phoenix, Ariz. He was working for Alsea Bay Power Products in Waldport.

He enjoyed flying, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Laura Vanderbeek.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn M. Vanderbeek, of Kirkland, Ariz. and Waldport; children, Keith (Tammy) John Vanderbeek of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Linda (Craig Stephen Smith) Marie Vanderbeek of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Susan Eleanor Vanderbeek; brother, David Loers Vanderbeek; and granddaughter, Heather Vanderbeek.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club, 750 SE Bay Blvd. in Newport. Memorial donations may be made to the Whale, Sea Life and Shark Museum at 234 SE Highway 101, Depoe Bay, OR 97341.
