Police search for man who escaped from custody

NEWPORT - Police are searching for a 24-year-old who they say escaped from custody as he was being transported from court to the jail to begin his sentence on a probation violation in a DUII case.

A news alert issued at 9:33 a.m. on Tuesday notes that Asa Allen Williams escaped from custody wearing a gray jacket and handcuffs. Police are actively searching for Williams, who they have said may have a handcuff key in his possession and a vehicle near the courthouse.

Police are searching near the Newport Post Office and in the Nye Beach area.

Williams is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has brown hair and green eyes.

Police are asking that anyone who has had contact with Williams or has information about his whereabouts call 9-1-1.
