Restaurant owners focus community effort on young folks
Mike and Carol Bowers see themselves as mentors to youth in Newport. They support that notion by hiring students and giving them a fun-yet-demanding work experience, and by donating their time, talents and food to various community events involving or catering to youngsters.
In 2009, Bowers purchased the brick-lined pizza ovens and recipes from the former Bayfront Pizza, paired up with another eatery owner and re-established the business as Savory Café and Pizzeria in Newport’s Nye Beach district. The restaurant features a menu with fresh seafood, vegetarian selections and a full assortment of pizzas. But for the city’s youth, it provides much more than a place to eat and hang out - it’s also a place to learn and earn.
