Newport mayor not seeking reelection

NEWPORT — Newport Mayor Mark McConnell stunned city staff and the city council Monday night with the announcement that he would not seek reelection this fall.

Reading from a prepared statement, McConnell said he wanted to spend his energy volunteering in other areas of the community and have time to pursue travel and fitness for himself.
