Lydia Yates

Lydia (Hill) Yates, 92, of Lincoln City, Ore., died of natural causes on May 19, 2012 in Newport, Ore.

She was born June 17, 1919 to Phillip Hill and Anna Catherine Melcher Hill in Germany. Her mother died in an accident when she was two, and her father brought her and her two brothers to America by ship when she was four. They settled in Gering, Neb., where other relatives resided.

Lydia moved to Portland, Ore. when she was 19 and married Lionel Yates at age 21. He preceded her in death in 1994.

After their three children were in school, she went to work in the boy’s department in an upscale department store in Portland’s Gateway District. After 22 years, she retired and enjoyed bowling and gardening. She loved to dance with her husband.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel Tyson Yates; and brothers, John Hill and William Hill.

She is survived by her sons, Robert G. Yates of Portland, Ore. and Douglas T. Yates of Arizona; daughter, Victoria Adkins of Lincoln City; daughter-in-law Diane Yates; brother, Ron Hill of Fremont, Neb.; and grandchildren, Erin Yates and Damon Yates of Portland.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.
