Controlled burn levels house

In a controlled event planned by the Newport Fire Department, this house on Coast Street was burned to the ground Wednesday evening. City Code Enforcement Officer Dustin Kittel said the homeowner lives in Washington and the city had been trying for several years to get her to address problems with the property. When all options failed, they pursued a warrant to dispose of the property. A code enforcement issue that lasted almost three years is no longer a problem on NW Coast Street after a controlled burn on Wednesday by the Newport Fire Department. Crowds gathered across the street to watch the event.
