Bike Newport gleans family business award

Bike Newport will become the newest recipient of the prestigious Austin Family Business Award this Thursday, joining previous winners Mos Seafood and Thompson Sanitary.

The Crowder family topped 16 other family businesses in Oregon and Washington for the award, which recognizes several aspects of a small family business, including community involvement, family ownership and business longevity.

I was shocked, said co-owner Daniella Crowder, Im telling you I could not believe it.

After a nomination from Ron Spisso from the Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC) Small Business Development Program and Gabrielle Wilson from Mos, Daniella and her husband Elliott filled out an extensive application - the first part of the process to winnow out the winner from among the other Oregon and Washington businesses in the running for the award. Crowder called the application process arduous, involving several dozen short answer questions. They made the cut and were selected as finalists to visit Portland and make a Powerpoint presentation to the judging panel.
