Assistance sought for fishing family

Posted: Friday, Apr 8th, 2011

Newport Fishermen’s Wives, a nonprofit organization that assists fishermen’s families in times of need or tragedy, is asking for help to assist a local commercial fishing family.

Marti and Tim Johnson welcomed baby Jax on Feb. 20, but soon afterward, he was Life-flighted to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Hirschsprungs disease. The nerves in his digestive system did not connect normally, which hinders his ability to eat and digest. It will require at least one surgery, and possibly more, to search out and reconstruct the nerves.

Marti was in the process of going to college online while working when she took maternity leave from her job for a few weeks. She is now unable to return to work or school at this time. Tim is a commercial fisherman in Newport, and is between fishing seasons without income. As a result, they are in need of temporary help with living expenses.

Donations are tax deductible and can be mailed to: Newport Fishermen’s Wives, P.O. Box 971, Newport, OR 97365. Please indicate the Johnson family in the memo or in a separate note. Additional information is available via email at
