The Department of Fish and Wildlife announced recently that there will be an April 22 lottery to award nine commercial sea urchin permits.
The commercial sea urchin fishery in Oregon is limited to 30 permits. When the number of permits falls below that number, ODFW holds a lottery to bring the number back up to 30. Nine permits currently are available.
Sea urchins are harvested by divers in the often rough waters off Oregonís nearshore at depths of 15 to 75 feet. In recent years, lack of consistent markets and price have had a strong influence on the fishery. Landing requirements to retain the permit include annual landings of 5,000 pounds; a total of 20,000 pounds must be harvested before the permit is eligible for transfer. For the complete article see the 03-02-2011 issue.
