Local brothers considered as ‘Deadliest Catch’ captains

Posted: Friday, Sep 17th, 2010

The producers of the Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ program are considering adding Wilson’s boat, the F/V Incentive and his brother Mike Wilson’s F/V Kiska Sea to the show’s lineup next season. In 33 years as an Alaskan commercial fisherman, Jim Wilson thought he’d seen everything, but he never imagined crab fishermen accorded celebrity status and in demand by Jay Leno and Larry King.

Wilson and his brother, Mike, might soon get a taste of the limelight themselves as the newest boat captains featured on Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ program. He says the show is interested in a sibling rivalry storyline between the two fiercely competitive brothers.

“They need someone to replace Phil,” Wilson says.

Phil being his friend of 25 years, Capt. Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie who died Feb. 9, 2010 after suffering a stroke while offloading crabs at St. Paul Island, Alaska. Wilson, 53, was Harris’ handpicked replacement, captaining the ship this summer for salmon and herring. The Cornelia Marie won’t be returning for next season’s episodes. If picked for the show, Jim Wilson will be skippering the 114-foot Incentive and Mike Wilson the 127-foot Newport-based Kiska Sea.

Jim and Mike Wilson both graduated from Waldport High School in the mid-’70s, along with three others who would all go on to become top Alaskan fishing boat captains.
