NEWPORT — Usually oil and water don’t mix, but the oil paintings and other magnificent works of art that comprise the “Maritime Heritage: Impressions in Art” group exhibition at Newport’s Pacific Maritime and Heritage Center serve a decidedly watery purpose: proceeds from their sale will benefit the PMHC, helping to keep the still-new facility on the Bayfront ship-shape and supporting its mission of instilling in residents and visitors a sense of place and community.

The exhibit, curated by renowned Toledo-based artist Michael Gibbons, takes as its subject the Oregon coast itself, its moods, its raw and breathtaking scenery, and its maritime industries. Originally scheduled to close June 28, exactly one year after the grand opening of the Heritage Center, the show has been held over until late September, giving locals and visitors an extra opportunity to view this remarkable collection and purchase the works that are for sale.
