Paul Kafoury Sr.

Long time Newport resident Paul Kafoury Sr. passed away December 30, 2013 in Albany, Oregon.

He celebrated his 100th birthday with his family in May. He was born May 23, 1913 in Salem, OR.

He married Virginia Patten in 1937 in Eugene, OR and they made their first home in Portland where he started his first electronics shop.

He served in the Army Air Corp in the World War II era and loved to fly. His wife, Virginia traveled with him during his military service to Colorado and Florida.

Paul was instrumental in bringing television to the Willamette Valley and broadcasting Portland channels to the Oregon coast. He installed the first antennas on Portland Police motorcycles, for their radio communications.

After the war they settled in Newport, where he started his business Radio Center, an electronic repair and appliance store which was in business over 50 years. He brought communications to the fishing fleets of the Oregon Coast. Many fishermen saved up the repairs for their radios and marine electronics until they could get into port to Newport for him to work on. Paul installed the translator on Otter Crest that was the second in the state and owned a cable company that brought television to South Lincoln County.

He and Virginia were charter members of the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club. He enjoyed fishing,camping and traveling with his family. He loved to attend the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, which he attended the last three years. He enjoyed discussing politics and had definite opinions, about current affairs. Most of all he was a devoted family man.

He is survived by his son, Paul Kafoury, Jr and Kathy Freeman of Monroe, daughter Suzanne Kafoury and Neil Henderson of Albany, 2 granddaughters and 4 great grand children, many nephews,nieces, cousins, and his two special dogs, Bear and Zoe.
