Elsie Irene Southwell Carver

Modified: Monday, Jan 13th, 2014

Elsie enjoyed going shopping, having lunch with friends and as she put it “camping in the dirt” with husband Lloyd as they would spend time camping and fishing.

Elsie Irene Southwell Carver was born in Falls City, Oregon on December 18, 1926 to Howard Harrington Southwell and Saima Aliina Niemi. Elsie attended Siletz grade schools and graduated from Toledo High School in 1945. She worked as secretary for the judge when the county seat was still in Toledo. She married Lloyd Waddell Carver on December 5, 1947 at the Trinity Methodist Church in Toledo, and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage until Lloyd’s heavenly home going in 2011. Elsie was a stay-at-home wife and mother while husband Lloyd owned and operated Lloyd’s Auto Service in Toledo for many decades.

Elsie taught Sunday School, and many Bible studies throughout her life, with involvement in Christian Women’s Clubs and Stonecroft Bible studies. She was known for her cooking skills, with specialties of coconut cream pie, maple bars and barbecued meatballs. She loved people, sent many notes of encouragement to others and was known as a prayer warrior. Playing the piano “by ear”, Elsie served as church pianist and organist for many years, and would play for Joy Group meetings, TOPS meetings (she called them the “fat songs”), and offertories at church. Elsie enjoyed going shopping, having lunch with friends and as she put it “camping in the dirt” with husband Lloyd as they would spend time camping and fishing.

Elsie was a member of the VFW, Gideons International, Newport Church of the Nazarene, and also attended Lincoln City Church of the Nazarene, where her granddaughter Kelli serves as pastor.

Following a car accident two years ago, Elsie moved from the family home of 50 years to Oceanview Assisted Living, where she passed away on January 10, 2014 after a brief bout with pneumonia.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Siama Southwell, husband, Lloyd, and brother H. Eugene Southwell. She is survived by daughter LloyDene Westmark and husband Dave of Tillamook, son Lonnie and wife Dawn of Albany, son Steve and wife Leslie of Eddyville, and foster son Steve Atkinson and wife Dorothy of Gresham; grandchildren Casey, Kelli, Billie Jo, Deena, Adam, Steven,Haley and Stormi; and great-grandchildren Tyler, Shelby, Samara, Clayton, Cooper and Piper.

A Memorial Celebration of Elsie’s life will be held Sunday, January 19 at 2 p.m. at the Newport Church of the Nazarene. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate in memory of Elsie can give to Gideon’s International or Celebrate Recovery, both of which Elsie held dear.
