Rowena had a stroke in 1995, and in 1996 her son, Robert, bought the Cubs Cave across from Newport High School, where Rowena worked the front counter and waited on high school students every day there was school from 1996 until her death. She was known by many of the kids as Grandma.

Rowena was a member of the Toledo Elks Lodge and All Nations Lutheran Church in Newport. She enjoyed Bingo every Thursday and Sunday at the VFW Hall. She was also a Blazer basketball and Oregon State football fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hoefs; and her brother, Robert.
