James “Jim” F. Smith, 76, of Logsden, Ore., died May 31, 2012.
He was born Nov. 6, 1935 to Fred and Mae Smith in Paisley, Ore. Jim was the second to the oldest of seven boys. For the majority of his childhood, he lived in the Newport and Toledo area along the Yaquina Bay.
He married Sharon (Leach) Smith on July 1, 1957. They moved to Logsden a few years later. Jim worked at Georgia-Pacific Plywood in Toledo, Ore. from 1958 to 1984. They had four children, Kenneth, Glenn, David and Carrie.
Jim took pride in spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed working around their property - “The Stump Farm” he called it. He was diligent putting in a garden every year. He was quite a conversationalist and enjoyed talking with people and sharing stories.
Jim never knew a stranger. He had a way to make everyone feel loved and welcome in his home. He was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout the years. Jim enjoyed traveling with Sharon in their RV. Jim and Sharon took several trips to Alaska. A couple of their trips to Alaska and National Parks throughout the Western United States exceeded 10,000 miles each.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth; two brothers, Vern Sherman and Glen Smith; and mother, Mae Sherman.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon Smith; sons, Glenn Smith of Logsden, and David Smith of Portland; daughter, Carrie (Rick) Schadewitz of McMinnville; brothers, Zack Smith, Walt Sherman, Frank Sherman and Pat Sherman; three grandchildren, Kenneth Smith of Roanoke, Va., Aaryn Anderson of Portland, Ore. and Drew Anderson of The Dalles; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at the Logsden Community Club in Logsden.
Affordable Burial and Cremation is handling arrangements.
