After losing four-run lead, Newport fights back to the 10th inning finish

When the Newport and Taft baseball teams get together, it’s usually quite a show. As it turned out, Wednesday night’s version needed a few encores.

Tyler Dordan bombed a two-run shot over the right field wall to score the tying run, Jace Duty threw a no-hit final inning and the Newport Cubs edged out the Taft Tigers 9-8 in a 10-inning shootout to complete a season sweep of the Tigers and put themselves in position for a second place finish in the Oregon West.

The fireworks started early for the Cubs, who posted four runs in the first, capped off with a two-run homer by Duty to dead center field. The Tigers finally stopped Newport’s spree when first baseman Brent Martin caught a short foul ball and got to the bag before the Cub runner could tag up for an inning ending double play.
