Newport’s victory over Philomath puts them within playoff range
The Newport Cubs rolled up 262 yards on the ground, and played themselves back into the Val-Co League playoff race with a 19-7 home win against Philomath on Friday.
The Newport defense limited the Warriors to 227 yards of total offense, including 114 on the ground on 42 carries (2.7 yards per carry), a week after Philomath scored 63 points in a 30-point win against LaPine. During that romp, the Warriors put 42 points on the board in the second quarter alone, and Namer Fakhoury rushed for 254 yards on 15 carries and scored five times.
Newport held Fakhoury to just 64 yards on 17 carries.
Cubs quarterback Casee Case completed just 3-of-9 passes for 69 yards, but one was for the first score of the game - a 28-yarder to Kenny Mertens with 36 seconds to play in the second quarter. The extra point by Pete Gonzalez made the score 7-0.
Tristan Metcalf scored from 14 yards out with 6:05 remaining in the third. The senior carried 15 times for 106 yards in the game. The extra point failed, and Newport led 13-0.
Philomath got on the board with a 5-yard touchdown by Fakhoury, who added the extra point, making the score 13-7 with 10:53 on the clock.
Oshay Dunmore scored on a 6-yard run for Newport, making the count 19-7 after a failed two-point conversion try. Dunmore had 74 yards on eight carries.
Alex Grant added 38 yards on five carries and Chris Barth had 26 yards on five carries. In addition to Mertens’ catch, Metcalf had one grab for 25 yards, and Zak Bremner caught one pass for 16 yards.
Grant had 12 tackles for the Newport defense, including four solo tackles. Dunmore’s five solo tackles led the team. He had six total, and added a fumble recovery. Barth had one interception.
The Cubs regular season ends at Taft on Friday as they battle the Tigers. Newport downed Taft at home 42-14 last year.
