‘Blackfish’ film includes local diver’s part in capture of orcas

This pair of adult killer whales were two of about 80 orca that were corralled in Penn Cove on Aug. 8, 1970 for the purpose of capturing juveniles that were sold to aquariums such as Sea World. John Crowe hangs a “Free Willy” type of banner from the second deck of his Nye Beach home in hopes of eventually having Lolita, an orca that he helped capture in 1970, released from the Miami Seaquarium.


This week’s showing of the “Blackfish” documentary at the Newport Performing Arts Center was a painful recollection for local resident John Crowe, who in August 1970 was among several divers involved in capturing orca whales in Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, Wash.
