Billeter Marine of Coos Bay began construction last week in Depoe Bay of a new pier to replace the one ravaged by the tsunami generated by the March 2011 Japanese earthquake. Pete Billeter, company president, said his four-man crew, working from a crane barge, are installing new galvanized steel pilings over the old and laying end-to-end seven “fish-friendly” aluminum docks supported by plastic floats and creased by a clear plastic walkway that sheds light on the marine life below. Work on the $370,000 project, largely paid by with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Administration, will take about two weeks to complete.
