Students bearing a U.S. flag made in class and boxes of cookies and thank you cards met veterans gathered for a ceremony Thursday at Siletz Valley School. Holding the flag were Lilly Hicks, left, and Chloie Oliphant. Back row, left to right, were Katie Stephens, Danielle Clark, Tiffany Stokes and Jamie Helms. The tired eyes of an old veteran lit up and went moist as a young girl handed him a poem of tribute meticulously enhanced by crayon art, one of the many simple, heartfelt gifts that honored former service members during a ceremony Thursday at Siletz Valley School.
