Toledo Junior/Senior High briefly went into lockdown after students and staff heard shots fired near the school building early this afternoon (Tuesday).

At 12:45 p.m., secretary Kay Chambers said the school had been in contact with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and were awaiting a deputy’s arrival to investigate. The student aide who answered the phone at Toledo Junior/Senior High just before 12:45 p.m. said that Principal Clint Raever and Assistant Principal Paul Tucker were both out of the building for the day.

School district safety coordinator Sue Graves said that the school went into a “code yellow” lockdown at 12:25 p.m., during lunch. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office investigated and gave the all clear, ending the lockdown at 12:50 p.m.

In a code yellow lockdown, students are taken into the classrooms, doors are locked and teaching continues. Graves said that a code yellow lockdown allows police to investigate and keeps students and staff out of potential harm’s way.

In a code red lockdown, students go into their classrooms and settle on the floor with the doors locked and lights off. In that situation, instruction stops.

“A couple of years ago, [the school went into code yellow lockdowns] frequently, then for the last couple of years there hasn’t been much at all,” Graves said. “The schools are right next to the woods so when teachers hear shots fired, they always go into a lockdown until police can investigate and clear the situation.”
