Depoe Bay scrambles to fill fireworks void with replacement event

DEPOE BAY — Chamber of Commerce officials have declared “Independence Daze” as the replacement for its annual 3rd of July Fireworks, the popular event killed by a U.S. Fish & Wildlife study that said the explosive display drove away 5 percent of the nesting cormorants at nearby Pirate Cove.
