Ocean observatory project moves toward deployment

Oregon State University researchers should launch a fleet of undersea gliders in 2012 and deploy new moored ocean-observing platforms in 2013 as the installation phase of the National Science Foundationís $386 million Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), which includes Newport as a key site, moves closer to deployment.

The project reached a benchmark earlier this year when two fiber optic cables were connected to a shore facility in Pacific City.
