These include all phases of the construction and maintenance of City streets, water distribution, and sewage collection systems. Carries out monthly and periodic reading of City water meters. Performs other related tasks involving customer contact and including maintenance of service connections. WORK HOURS: 8:00 am-5:00 pm Monday-Friday, with a one-hour lunch break. Occasionally required to work outside normal hours, to be available on an on-call basis, or as assigned by supervisor. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the immediate supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, receives daily assignments from the Public Works crew leader. TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: 1. Reads water meters and records results for billing purposes. Delivers notices to customers when required and communicates with the public with respect to these duties. 2. Installs water meters and service connections. Tests water meters to check accuracy. Carries out limited repair to meters. Performs plumbing repairs on service connections. 3. Performs meter box maintenance, including, but not limited to, maintaining address numbers of meter box and keeping meter box clear of debris and vegetation for easy location. 4. Performs street maintenance activities including patching, pothole repairs, brush control, and drainage improvements. 5. Carries out water distribution and sewage collection system maintenance including tracing and repairing leaks, pipe repair and replacement, manhole repair and sewer cleaning. 6. Maintenance of other City facilities equipment and systems and other tasks as assigned by supervisor and crew leader. 7. Proactively assesses customer needs; responds expediently to requests; demonstrates concern for customer and treats customer with dignity and professionalism. 8. Builds rapport within work team; proactively supports attaining City, Departmental, and section goals and objectives. Creates positive first impressions; is honest and tactful in both pleasant and unpleasant situations; develops relationships of cooperation, trust and teamwork with associates; respects the diverse nature of all people; seeks consensus; keeps supervisor informed of job-related matters; willingly accepts direction from supervisor/crew leader and other staff. 9. QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES: Some experience and background in street, water or wastewater maintenance is desired. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Desired knowledge and understanding of the operation of Water Distribution systems and also of streets, drainage, and sewage systems. Clear and legible handwriting is a must, as is the ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically with the public. Good public relation skills are essential to this position. Requires the ability to meet quality standards set by City, State, and Federal regulative agencies. This position calls for a willingness to work in all phases of operations and under varying weather conditions. The ability to work as a team member is a necessity. Requires ability to lift and move heavy objects. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years in public works or related work experience is desired. NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid Oregon State Driver's License is essential. Knowledge of heavy equipment is desirable. Possession of Oregon Distribution Operators Certification is desirable. Salary level will vary in accordance with state registration as a water or wastewater operator. Also requires Oregon flagger’s certification card. Incumbent will be required to obtain a Grade-1 level certification in Water Distribution through the State of Oregon Department of Human Services or Wastewater Collections Certification through the Department of Environmental Quality in 18-months.
